My Top 5 Free Fitness Apps
Vivian Seljee

Working out can be quite expensive, with gym memberships starting from £16 a month. It is important to keep fit, but not everyone has that type of money to spend every month. Of course there are cheaper alternatives such as fitness DVD’s or going for a run. I’ll be honest, I’m pretty cheap when it comes to working out and I like the comfort of my own home. That’s why these five fitness apps on my iPhone are perfect for me. Best thing about them: they’re free!

There are a lot of different types of fitness apps in Apple’s App Store, varying from cycling to yoga to running. I’m more of a quick, easy workout kind of person, so that’s what my favourite fitness apps consist of.

1. Nike+ Training Club

“Your personal trainer. Anytime. Anywhere.” And Nike are right. With over a hundred workouts you will find the perfect workout for your fitness level. Select your fitness goal (get lean, get toned, get strong, or get focused), your level (beginner, intermediate, or advances) and you can get started with the workout – which are very easy to follow. The workouts vary from 7 to 45 minutes.

2. The Johnson & Johnson Official 7-Minute Workout

This app contains 22 different workouts, varying from easy to hard. Most workouts are seven minutes. That is a big plus for me, since I’m not much of a diehard sport fanatic but still want to keep fit. Also, the app let’s you play your own music while working out, so I can rap along to the pump-up hip-hop songs on my phone. What I like most about this app is that you can custom your workouts with trainings that benefit you most or you like best.

3. FitStar Personal Trainer

This app really is just like a personal trainer. It adapts to your needs and fitness level by asking you a couple easy questions at the end of every workout. The next workout will be adjusted to those answers, so every new workout will be challenging but won’t destroy you.

4. Workout Trainer

Training app that offers thousands of free workouts – designed for a lot of different fitness goals, fitness levels and personal preferences. Here you have no excuse saying you don’t understand the workout, because the app includes instructional photos, videos and audio cues that illustrate every exercise.
If you want, you can choose a fitness program that gives you a schedule for the next three or four weeks. Unfortunately, this part of the app costs $9.99 (£6.68).

5. Steps Pedometer & Step Counter Activity Tracker

Ok, so maybe this one doesn’t completely count as a fitness app. But on some days I just don’t want to do a complete workout, even though they can be only seven minutes. On those days I like to go out on walks – only if it’s not raining though, it has to stay fun. This app lets you set your goal for the day (for example 3000 steps or about 2.1 km) and tracks if you’re going to reach that amount. It says how many steps you’ve taken, the distance you walked and how long it took.
