First Impression: L'Oréal Paris Infallible 24H-Matte

Vivian Seljee

It’s winter, the time of dry skin. Wrong. Some of us are cursed with combination to oily skin. Cursed, because most high street foundations seem to be targeted at normal to dry skin. For those of us with oily skin, it’s hard to find the right foundation in Boots or Superdrug. L’Oréal Paris might have come up with a solution: their new Infallible 24H-Matte foundation.

If you have combination/oily skin, you know it’s quite hard to find an affordable foundation. Most oil control foundations are quite pricey: Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation (£41.99), Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet (£29.60) and Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation (£50).

If you do find an affordable foundation for combination/oily skin, most of the time they don’t leave your skin matte for too long. The only affordable foundation I've found that does its job is Revlon Colorstay (£12.49), which is the foundation I’ve been using for about three years now. This foundation will keep you shine-free for a good eight hours, without touching up. I can say with confidence that it is my Holy Grail foundation. Let’s see if this new L’Oréal Infallible 24H-Matte foundation can compete with my trusty old Revlon Colorstay.

Packaging

The packaging is quite simple, but functional. It comes in a tube, which makes it easy to control the amount of foundation that you use. The foundation claims to have a matte finish, to be lightweight, non-cakey and to last up to 24 hours. It says it has a medium texture with a high coverage and a matte finish. The tube contains 35 ml of product.

Color selection

The range of colors isn’t too extensive. You can only choose from six different shades, but to be fair this is the average amount for high street foundations. However, Revlon Colorstay (combination/oily skin) offers thirteen different shades.

The shades are: 10 Porcelain, 11 Vanilla, 12 Natural Rose, 13 Beige Rose, 20 Sand and 30 Honey. If you have a darker colored skin, this foundation will not be for you as the shade Honey is still fairly light.

I chose the shades Vanilla and Sand, as I couldn’t find an exact match unfortunately. If I combine these two, I can create the perfect shade for me (with a yellow undertone). You can tell by my makeup-less picture that my face is actually quite pink. However, my neck and the rest of my body have a yellow undertone. You always want to match the color of your neck and chest, to make your foundation look as natural as possible. No one wants to walk around with a foundation mask!

Review

I applied the foundation with a dampened Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge, which I always use to apply my Revlon foundation as well. The foundation felt pretty light on my skin, although it covered well. I would say if you apply one coat, it has a medium coverage. However, you can build it up to a high coverage.

I set the foundation with my Collection Lasting Perfection powder.

I do recommend applying a moisturizer (preferably oil-free) beforehand as the foundation can accentuate any dry spots you may have. I used Clean&Clear Dual Action moisturizer.

The foundation even passed the flash-photography test, which means that it is perfect for parties (where you get photographed with flash pretty often). It doesn't give you a white cast, because it does not contain any SPF. For everyday wear this might be a con, as it does not protect you from sun damage. You can however always apply a moisturizer with SPF beforehand.

After three hours the foundation still looked amazing. I was still shine-free, even in my T-zone where I get shiniest the fastest. A total of eight hours later and my foundation still looked good. My nose was a tiny bit shiny, but the rest of my T-zone still looked matte. I touched up with the same Collection Lasting Perfection powder and I was good to go.

Overall I think this is an amazing oil controlling foundation, especially for the price. It keeps you matte for a good eight hours, and even looks good after touching up. However, I’m not too sure it will keep you shine-free for 24 hours. For me that’s not such a big con, because I don’t wear my foundation for an entire day anyway.

Where to buy?

You can find the new L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24H-Matte in Boots and Superdrug for £7.99. At the moment the foundation is reduced to £6.99 in both stores, so get it even cheaper while you can!

You can find a Boots store in High Street and in St Marks Shopping Centre. Superdrug is in Waterside Shopping Centre, on the lower floor.
